It stands on a slight rise of ground facing south. The house is a four -bay two-story stone dwelling with dark green and white trim. Brick chimneys with corbeled caps are locate d internally at each gable end. The roof, which is probably not original, is of slate with a rather large overhang at the gables. A large dormer with a gabled top and a palladian-type window dating from ca. 1920 is located on the south roof front. It is likely that the house was re -roofed when the dormer was added early in the 20th century. Walls of the facade of the house consist of coursed rubble limestone, while the gable and rear walls are of uncoursed stone. Flat stone arches are located over each window in the two main stories of the house. A porch dating from ca. 1920 extends across the front of the house. It has a low hipped roof with a decorative gable centered under the dormer. The first floor windows were probably lengthened when other exterior changes were made during Anthony ownership early in the 20th century. A small window was cut in the second story facade at the center of the house to illuminate a bathroom. Original windows are located at both gable ends as well as the broadsides of the house. The front door is located in the third bay from the west end of the house. It is quite simply framed and includes a transom. This door enters into a hallway extending the length of the house. Fireplaces are located in each room of both floors of the house. All the fireplace mantels have considerable decorative work, considering the rather simple nature of the original exterior detail. There is no date stone indicating the year that this house was built. The large size of the house and the great number of windows present indicate that it was built well after the early days of settlement. Window glass could apparently be obtained easily at the time this dwelling was constructed. The structure appears to have been built between 1810 and 1835. The property includes a tenant house which was built early in the 20th century. Incorporated in the tenant house is an earlier spring house, which probably dates from the time of the construction of the main house. Miss Chloe Anthony, a daughter of the previous owner, remembers old foundation stones located behind (north) of the present stone house which she believes were the remains of an earlier log dwelling. Although this house has been altered considerably, it does represent a typical style of building in Western Washington County as well as Western Maryland. Stone house construction is quite common in this district with most examples dating from the first half of the 19th century. A major group of settlers in Washington County were Germans who migrated to the area from central Pennsylvania. German surnames are evident in the early land records of much of Washington County, espe- cially in the area west of Hagerstown.
